In a recent article for FINalternatives, Forum President and CEO Susan Wyderko, reminds advisers coming from the private fund space that a well-functioning board is key to a fund’s success. Wyderko lends her experience in working daily with directors to provide advice in selecting board members. She suggests that alternative funds find candidates who understand complex investment strategies and understand the regulatory environment and especially the scrutiny targeted at alternative funds. Directors should be able to conceptualize key relationships with service providers and ask probing questions of the adviser. Wyderko argues that “[i]dentifying effective, experienced board members can be its own unique challenge” and notes that the Forum has assisted many fund boards in finding candidates.
